After a courageous battle against cancer, with her family by her side Anchilla Maria McDonald passed away on January 25, 2022 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital, at the age of 67 years.
She is survived by her husband Larry of 40 years, children Ashley (Matt), Aimee (Peter), and Amanda (Gord). Her grandchildren Piercen, Decklan, Averi, Annika, Cohen, Carter and Alice. She is also survived by her siblings Mary (Arnold), Reynold (Robin), and Jolanda (Peter). She was predeceased by parents – Henry and Josephine Frieling.
Anchilla was born in Vegreville, Alberta and moved to Kenora in her childhood. She married the love of her life Larry, in 1981 and soon thereafter started their family and raised their girls. She was passionate about sewing from an early age. She always wanted to become a home economics teacher. She was very talented and spent many hours sewing beautiful dresses for her daughters and working on various sewing projects. She made sure each of her granddaughters had a special quilt when they were born. Her talents didn’t end at sewing, she was also a gifted knitter, knitting many sweaters, socks, and toques for her children and grandchildren. She was a dedicated and competitive curler, spending hours on the ice skipping many teams. One of her favorite memories was playing in a bonspiel with her daughters on her team. She worked at Safeway for over 35 years creating many friendships and memories. There weren’t many people who didn’t know Anchilla from her years of working at Safeway. Later in her life she developed a passion for golf being an integral part of running the Wednesday night ladies golf league at Beauty Bay Golf Course.
Her grandchildren were her world. She enjoyed watching them play hockey and spent many hours at the rink cheering them on. She rarely missed a game or event that her grandchildren were involved in. She loved to spoil them. Every Sunday the family would get together for dinner, cooking and creating memories together. Something that will be cherished forever. A celebration of Anchilla’s Life will be held at a later date.
In honour of Anchilla’s life, donations to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation or to support research for Triple Negative Breast Cancer is appreciated by the family. The funds that were raised for the GoFundMe for her treatment will be donated to the same.
