Darrell Eugene Midgard (MUDD) August 26, 1953 - February 15, 2022
No matter how much you think you are prepared you just aren't ready to say goodbye.
We are saddened to say Darrell Eugene Midgard our Dad, Big Bruv, Uncle, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, on February 15, 2022, with his brother Martin at his side.
Darrell leaves to mourn his two sons, Shawn and Bradie whom he loved and cherished and would do anything for them.
He will be forever in the hearts of his siblings Martin (Wendy), Darnell (Keith), and Rae-Ann. He was predeceased by his mother Jean and his father Martin Eugene, and his younger brother Donald Lloyd, who was tragically taken at the age of 5. Darrell always affectionately called his sisters Darnell "Sissy" and Rae-Ann "Jiggs" whenever they talked.
He will be truly missed by his nephews Martin Jr. (Kirsten, Sawyer) Michael (Stephanie, Ryan, Jace), Tyler (Rachel, Mikaya), and Ryley (Jenny). He is also survived by his 2 Uncles Lloyd Henton and Donnie (Linda) Henton, and by numerous cousins and lifelong friends.
Darrell was the first born to Martin Eugene and Jean in Kenora. From an early age to his teenage years Darrell was raised in Ontario Hydro Colonies, and numerous towns in Northwestern Ontario, moving several times while his Father was working for Ontario Hydro on the construction of new transmission lines to power dams and hydro lines across Ontario. (Hydro colonies were established for the Hydro workers at Little Long Rapids and Chub Lake where Darrell made many friends. Those friendships continue to this day as a member of the Facebook site "Hydro Brats").
Darrell started his working career as an apprentice pipe fitter at the LWDH in Kenora while it was undergoing renovations. While he enjoyed doing this work the Alberta oil fields sounded more promising with better financial benefits.
He returned to Hurkett, Ontario to our Grandparents homestead where he renovated and built an addition making it into his own home.
Darrell loved camping and was an avid hunter and fisherman with a great love and respect for the outdoors. He shared this passion with his two sons. He loved his Harley motorcycle and over the years had a couple accidents which resulted with his doctor signing his cast "first came the beaver, then came the moose, sure hope an elephant doesn't get loose", after which the doctor said "watch out MUDD there's a circus in town!"
Darrell worked for many years at the Red Rock mill until it closed. He then went to work for the Highway Contractors in the Nipigon region as a snowplow operator and did road work maintenance in the summer.
Wherever Darrell went he made a lot of lasting friendships.
Cremation has taken place.
A private family service will be held in Kenora at a later date. His ashes will be interred together with his Mother's ashes at the Lake of the Woods Cemetery on his late brothers grave.
The family would like to thank the Doctors' and Nurses' on the 3rd floor of the LWDH for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
A special "thank you" and hugs to Kathy Cederwall for looking after Darrell at his home until we were able to bring him to Kenora.
