Heading abroad?

Janice Thys, the owner of Expedia Cruises Sherwood Park, says the biggest change as of recent is the option to take a rapid antigen over a mandatory PCR test.

There are currently three types of COVID-19 tests international travellers are allowed to use:

  • Negative rapid antigen test mentioned within a day of travel
  • Negative PCR test within 72 hours of return to Canada
  • Positive PCR test from 10 to 180 days from the date of your return

The antigen test is significantly cheaper in Canada and abroad.

"It still has to be done by a medical professional. So, whether that's at a drug store or you book an appointment. You can't just use the one from home," said Thys.

The change came into effect on Feb. 28 for those who are double vaccinated.

Other notes

Masking, as airports and train stations are federally regulated, is still mandatory, as is the use of the ArriveCan app for those entering or leaving the country.

Those travelling in Canada over 12 only need to show proof of being double vaccinated.

Thys added hot destinations for locals right now are Mexico and Europe.
