The Pembina Valley Twisters season came to an end Monday night at Bell MTS Iceplex. Noah Gilbert stopped all 24 shots he faced as the St. James Canucks shutout Pembina Valley 5-0 and captured the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League's best-of-seven final four games to one. Kale Price, Zach Greenwood, Tyrone Willan, Brady Whitely and Ashton Romaniuk did the goal scoring for the Canucks. Twisters netminder Logan Enns faced 42 shots including 19 in the first period. It's the second MMJHL championship for St. James. The Canucks won their first titile in 1998.
Former Terrier Captain Logan Calder and the Dauphin Kings will face the Steinbach Pistons in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Turnbull Trophy final. Dawson Milliken scored his second goal of the game at 9:14 of the third period and Zach Power added an empty-netter with 20 second left in regulation as Steinbach defeated the Virden Oil Capitals 4-2 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Jack Rogers also scored for the Pistons who took the best-of-seven semifinal four games to two. Parker Johnson and Branden Huminuk replied for the Oil Capitals. Huminuk's first of the playoffs at 4:28 of the third period tied the game at 2-2. The Kings eliminated the Winkler Flyers in five games in the other semifinal.
Defenseman Josh Morrissey has been named the Winnipeg Jets nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The Masterton Trophy is awarded annually by the National Hockey League to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Morrissey, 27, overcame the off-season death of his father, Tom, to cancer to put together one of the best seasons of his NHL career.Morrissey is active in the community and raised more than $3,700 for Cancer Care earlier this season by auctioning off a "game worn" purple velvet blazer as a tribute to his dad. He serves as an ambassador for The Dream Factory and hosts The Josh Morrissey Classic, an event that raised nearly $500,000 for Manitoba children battling life-threatening diseases in the first three years. Morrissey is also an ambassador for Camp Manitou and Project 11, in addition to being an active board member with the True North Youth Foundation. He also started his own Foundation called the Glass Half Full Foundation, which helps raise funds for various Mental Health programs and is active both in Winnipeg and his hometown of Calgary. The Masterton Trophy was first presented by the NHL Writers' Association in 1968 to commemorate the late William Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars, who was originally from Winnipeg and exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Masterton died on January 15, 1968 after sustaining an injury during a hockey game.
Team Canada will play its final preliminary round game today (8:30 a.m.) against the Czech Republic at the 2022 World U18 Hockey Championship in Landshut, Germany. Canada has a 1-1 record. Team Canada lost its opener 8-3 to the United States on Saturday and then defeated Germany 8-3 on Sunday.
Jocelyn Peterman & Brett Gallant have a 4-1 record at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Geneva. Sherry Anderson is 2-1 and Wade White is 3-0 at the World Senior Curling Championships which are also in Switzerland.
