What started out as a report regarding a suspicious male, ended up in a short pursuit and charges of assault on a member of the Winkler Police Service.
Just after 2 am on April 29th, Winkler Police were given a description of both the male and the vehicle he was in.
When officers first located the suspect vehicle, they witnessed it driving erratically. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, at which time the vehicle fled, and a pursuit was initiated with the vehicle eventually stopping.
The driver then got out of the vehicle and attempted to run inside his residence, at which time he assaulted a police officer. The male was arrested, during which time he continued to resist police.
The male was then transported to the Winkler Police Service where he provided two breath samples of 160 mg% and 150 mg%. He was charged with Impaired Driving, Driving While Over .08, Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Vehicle, Assaulting a Peace Officer and Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest. His driver’s licence was suspended for three months, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
While monitoring traffic Friday evening in Winkler, police spotted a pair of street racers in the act.
Police noted they were monitoring traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Mountain Avenue when they saw the traffic light turn green and two vehicles accelerate very quickly, racing side by side at approximately 80 km/hr.
A traffic stop was conducted on one of the vehicles.
The driver was issued a seven-day driver’s license suspension, his vehicle was seized for seven days, and he was issued a ticket for Racing with another motor vehicle.
Meanwhile, the driver of the other vehicle was not known to the accused and was not located by police.
