The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Thursday that Rayce Ramsay of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Humboldt Broncos has been named its Top Goaltender Award honouree for the 2021-22 season.
Ramsay garnered the laurels over fellow top netminder finalists Kolby Thornton, Lloydminster Bobcats (AJHL); Reece Proulx, Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL); Noah Metivier, Soo Thunderbirds (NOJHL) and James Gray, North York Rangers (AJHL), after a national voting process completed by each of the nine leagues, that comprise the CJHL.
“It’s an honour to be selected for the Top Goaltender Award. There were a lot of great goalies this year in the SJHL alone, never mind the entire nation, so it’s a pretty cool feeling being recognized on that large of a scale,” said Ramsay. “I know I wouldn’t be getting this accolade without the support of my teammates and coaches this year. I can’t thank them enough for helping me get to where I am today.”
Wrapping up his junior career in style, the Saskatoon, Sask., product established a SJHL single-season record for wins in a season with 41, in just 50 starts. Of note, his victory total was 16 more than his nearest league rival.
Ramsay also paced all SJHL stoppers in both goals-against average and save percentage, among those who saw 2,000, or more minutes of game action, at 1.98 and .930 respectively.
In total, he played 2,973 minutes during the season, which was nearly 400 more than any other league goalkeeper.
Meanwhile his five shutouts tied him for third-best in the SJHL.
Ramsay will continue his playing career and further his education at the University of Toronto where Ramsay will compete in the USPORTS/OUA ranks with the Varsity Blues men’s hockey program.
