The City of Morden and the local Horticulture Society are calling all green thumbs to rally for a downtown planting blitz today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Heather Fehr, a Lead Hand for the City's Parks and Urban Forestry department who helps deal with "everything green and growing", says they plan on filling some 40 planters and four flower beds at the main downtown intersection in the span of two hours.
"We have a lot of begonias and petunias and grasses. Our colour scheme this year is going to be pinks, purples, and burgundies mixed with some silvers and whites. We're really trying to uplift the community after the past two years."
Beautifying the city is more than just window dressing, emphasizes Fehr.
"It is one of the historical aspects of our community linked to the research station and a main reason why a lot of people like to live in Morden. We have all the trees and we have a lot of flowers around."
Volunteers are asked to meet at the sun catch next to the Peace Tower.
Further information is available by contacting Fehr or by contacting society member Marge Fehr by email at margaretfehr@live.com.
Looking forward, Fehr says another project in the works is sprucing up Confederation Park downtown, an outdoor space that displays a cenotaph and honours the City's role in the two World Wars.
On another growing note, Fehr says eight plots remain available at the City's Community Gardens at a rate of $30 for a 300-square-foot space on Loren Drive. Gardeners can email lilykrushel@mymorden.com.
