Northwestern Ontario’s recent heat wave has broken a 27-year-old record for the Kenora area, and another record could be broken later this afternoon.
Environment Canada says Sunday’s high of 33 degrees Celsius in Kenora was the warmest June 19 on record dating back to 1995, when the record was set at 31.8 degrees.
“We did get up to 33 degrees yesterday, breaking that record. In terms of the heat and humidity, there’s one more day to go, and it’s already 28 or 29 degrees in the Kenora area,” notes Meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
Today’s record of 34.1 degrees was also set back in the summer of 1995. Coulson says it’s possible the area surpasses that mark this afternoon, which as of writing, has a high of 34 degrees in the forecast.
“Along with the heat and humidity, we are looking at the chance of some showers and thunderstorms in a good portion of northwestern Ontario,” adds Coulson. “After that, we are going to see a change in the air mass with a cold front expected to move through the area overnight tonight.”
Environment Canada reminds residents that a heat warning is still in effect and residents should drink plenty of water, check on vulnerable friends and family, watch for symptoms of heat illness, take breaks if working outdoors and ask your doctor on how your medications may affect your risk.
