Aneroid's Patrick Marleau is being bestowed with one of the ultimate honours in sports.

The San Jose Sharks announced on Thursday they will retire his jersey number and raise it to the rafters of SAP Center on February 25, 2023 when the Sharks host the Chicago Blackhawks.

Marleau's #12 will be the first number to be retired by the Sharks in their 31-year franchise history.

He announced his retirement and ended his 23-year NHL career in May of 2022, with 20 of those seasons spent in San Jose, the team that drafted him in the first round, second overall, in 1997.

Marleau scored 566 goals and 1197 points with the Sharks, Leafs and Penguins over an NHL record 1779 regular season games played, breaking the previous record held by "Mr. Hockey" himself, the late Gordie Howe.
