While on general patrol last Thursday, an officer with the Winkler Police Service witnessed a male passenger in a vehicle on Highway 14 drinking alcohol.
Police stopped the vehicle on Highway 14 near 15th Street, and during the stop, officers found several cans of alcohol inside the vehicle, and an odor of liquor was noticed on the breath of the driver.
The driver was required to provide a breath sample into a roadside screening device, which registered a “fail” reading.
The 27-year-old male had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days, he was issued a $700 fine, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. A ticket was also issued under the Liquor and Gaming Control Act for Unlawful Transportation of Liquor in a Motor Vehicle.
The Winkler Police Service has released more information regarding an incident on the morning of August 2nd where they asked the public to avoid 14th Street between Pembina Avenue and Mountain Avenue for a period of time.
That morning around 11 am police received a report of a man on the roof of a house on 14th Street. The house, which the man was renting, is a 2-level structure with a steep roof.
The Regional Crisis Negotiation Unit, which is comprised of members from the Altona, Morden, and Winkler Police Services, was called in and immediately engaged in conversation with the man, who was causing damage to the chimney with a sledgehammer, and saying he wanted to jump from the roof.
After almost 3 hours of negotiating with the man he safely climbed down.
He was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act and assessed by a physician at Boundary Trails Health Centre.
A Ford truck with a trailer was reported missing to police on July 26th.
The truck and trailer were stolen from a business on Eastview Drive and occurred during the evening of July 24th.
On August 1st, the trailer which was reported stolen on July 26th was located in Winnipeg and has been returned to the owner.
Officers continue to investigate.
Meanwhile, on July 26th police responded to a report of a bathroom structure on fire at the Emerado School grounds.
Members of the Winkler Fire Department extinguished the blaze.
Police say a witness reported seeing several youths running from the scene.
