A man from Vita faces numerous charges after allegedly assaulting two Steinbach RCMP officers last weekend.
On Sunday at approximately 10:50 pm, Steinbach RCMP received a 911 report of a motor vehicle collision involving a deer that occurred along Provincial Road (PR) 301, near PR 303, five kilometres south of La Broquerie.
While the female passenger was talking to 911, the male driver took the phone and advised that everything was fine. When questioned further by the 911 operator, the male became belligerent and hung up the phone.
Officers attended the scene and as they arrived, the 62-year-old female passenger exited the vehicle and told officers that there had not been a collision with a deer but that she had been assaulted by the male driver.
As the officers approached the 36-year-old male to make an arrest, police say he became combative and struck both officers repeatedly before he could be physically restrained with the assistance of other arriving officers.
Police say after his arrest, the accused, who continued his combative and belligerent behaviour, was taken to hospital for the injuries he sustained during his arrest. He was treated and released back into police custody where he was lodged in a cell overnight.
The two officers who had been assaulted, were both taken to hospital where they were treated and released.
The man, from Vita, was remanded into custody on charges of assault, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of uttering threats and two counts of resisting arrest.
Steinbach RCMP continue to investigate.
