The province's Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle chase that resulted in the suspect sustaining a broken ankle.
According to a notification sent to the IIU, around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30th, a member of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service was responding to a disturbance in Roseau River First Nation. Then at 7:45 a.m., the officer spotted a subject motor vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop. The vehicle however, sped up at a high rate of speed then braked abruptly at a stop sign and slid into a ditch.
The driver, who was apprehended after a short foot chase, had sustained an injury to his ankle and was brought to Morris General Hospital by paramedics where it was confirmed to be broken.
Because a broken ankle meets the definition of a serious injury under IIU regulations, the unit is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
The investigation is ongoing and no further details will be provided at this time.
