Joan Mary (née Thiel) Friestadt
January 9, 1960 – September 27, 2022
On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, Joan Mary (née Thiel) Friestadt passed away at Humboldt District Hospital in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. She was 62 years of age. Joan was born to Ralph and Rita (née Kowolski) Thiel at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt on January 9, 1960. The eldest of three siblings, she was a sister to brothers Wesley, and Donald. Her family had a farm outside Bruno, SK, where she was raised and attended Bruno School. In grade 10 Joan attended the St. Ursula Academy in Bruno, SK, until she graduated in grade 12. In later years she moved to Carmel, SK., married Clem Friestadt, and was blessed with one daughter Zena. While she worked at Section 7 Farms for many years, she loved her job and enjoyed her friendship with the owners Harry and Ruth Wadel. Joan was known as a very positive person who always made the best out of every situation. Fond of animals, she especially loved dogs and horses. In her spare time, she liked to read, work on Christmas decorations and other arts and crafts. Due to health concerns, she had to leave her job with Star Eggs and make a move to Humboldt where she resided at East Side Village. Considerate of family and friends, Joan drove others for medical appointments or shopping trips, and visited with her niece Nicolette, and nephews Matthew, and Marc. It was a life highlight and a beautiful gift for Joan when she became grandmother to Olivia. Until this past June, Joan lived on her own and while in hospital she received visitors, including one that was incredibly special. Not long before she passed, Joel Cassaboom asked Joan for her daughter Zena’s hand in marriage, and Joan said, “Yes!” A special lady, Joan will be loved and deeply missed by her daughter Zena (Joel Cassaboom); granddaughter Olivia, Clem Friestadt, father to Zena and grandfather to Olivia; brothers Wesley, and Donald; niece Nicolette; nephews Matthew, and Marc; and many good friends and neighbours. She was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Rita (née Kowolski) Thiel. A Come & Go Gathering was held in memory of Joan on Thanksgiving Weekend, Saturday, October 8, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Royal Canadian Legion Club Room, in Humboldt, SK. Interment will follow in St. Bruno Roman Catholic Cemetery in Bruno, SK, at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed Humboldt & District SPCA (PO Box 3942, Humboldt, SK, S0K 2A0).
