Theresia Reiter
September 15, 1935 – October 3, 2022
The death of Theresia (nee Knotz) Reiter of Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK, on Monday, October 3, 2022. She was 87 years of age. Theresia was born to Michael and Julianna Knotz on September 15, 1935, in St. Peter, Hungary, which was mostly a German speaking community. In 1946, due to the hardships of WWII, her parents and siblings were sent to Germany. In Germany, Theresia finished school and worked in a laundry place, and also in a hotel ending up in the kitchen to help the chef. In 1958, Theresia came to Canada as a domestic helper. She traveled by ship, and then by train to Pilger, SK. In 1959, Theresia married John Reiter and they started their life together which lasted for 62 years. They had three children: Alphonse, Bonnie, and Betty. The family lived in Middle Lake for a while before moving and settling onto their farm. Theresia had many roles when it came to the farm, from raising chickens, selling eggs, milking cows, separating the milk, and selling the cream. She also had a large garden and did a lot of canning. She often made the meals for the men that were working in the field. Theresia was employed as a cook at Bethany Pioneer Village, where she worked for 25 years. She spoke often of her fondness for working there and all the people she cared for. Theresia really enjoyed baking and cooking. Her favorite time of year was Halloween, when she would make fresh donuts and sometimes sweet buns, that the kids made sure to stop in to get. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, Brendon and Lynnea. She would listen to their stories and enjoy looking at their pictures of cattle and their dogs. Theresia also looked forward to visits with other family members and friends. They often brought her fresh fish, which she really appreciated. Theresia will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two children and two grandchildren: Alphonse (Marianne) Reiter and their children Brendon and Lynnea, and Betty Reiter; her sister, Eva Wagenblast; her brother, Michael Knotz; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Reiter; daughter, Bonnie Reiter; parents, Michael and Julianna Knotz; brothers: Carl, Stephan, Paul, and Joseph Knotz; and by her brother-in-law, Peter Reiter, Jr. The Funeral Mass was offered at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, Middle Lake, on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy. Others taking part were: Noah Reiter, cross bearer; Lynnea Reiter, scripture reader; Rosanne Griffin, intentions; Graceyn Reiter and Lucas Reiter, gift bearers; and Betty Reiter, eulogist.
