The Portage Collegiate Saints volleyball team showed their resilience last night in their home opener. The girls defeated the Sturgeon Heights Huskies in three sets to improve their record to 2-1 so far this season.
The 2-2 PCI Trojans Football team is off to Winnipeg for a 4 p.m. game today. The team is coming off a 21-7 home field victory last week and will face the 1-3 Sisler Spartans.
The Zone 4 High School Soccer season comes to an end today. The Garden Valley Zodiacs will take on the Miller Aces in the Tier One girl's final while GVC will face Northlands Parkway in the boy's final. Both matches are at 4:30 p.m. in Winkler. The Morris Mavericks will meet the Dufferin Christian Stingers in Carman at 4:30 p.m. in the Tier Two girl's final and the Shevchenko Sabres take on Dufferin Christian in Vita at 5:30 p.m. in the boy's final.
Brody Beauchemin scored twice and Malachi Klassen made 31 saves as the Winkler Flyers defeated the Selkirk Steelers 6-2 at the Centennial Arena. Jayce Legaarden, Dalton Andrew, Zach Nicolas and Trent Penner also scored for the Flyers (5-3-0-1) who lead 3-0 before the six-minute mark of the first period. The two teams will wrap up their home-and-home series Saturday in Selkirk.
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's East Division co-leaders are in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The 7-0 Steinbach Pistons remain at number two while the 7-1 Portage Terriers are ranked 13th.The Ontario Junior Hockey League's Collingwood Blues are number one nationally for the second week in a row.
The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 3-1 decision to Regina. Alexander Suzdalev had a pair of goals for the Pats who received a 51-save performance from goaltender Matthew Kieper. Ben Thornton had the lone Brandon goal. The Wheat Kings will wrap up their season-opening four-game homestand Friday when they face the Saskatoon Blades at Westoba Place and then begin a season-high eight-game road trip Thanksgiving Monday against the Hitmen in Calgary.
Kyle Connor scored twice and David Rittich made 37 saves as the Winnipeg Jets shut out the Calgary Flames 5-0 at Canada Life Centre. Mark Scheifele, Dominic Toninato and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored for Winnipeg. Sam Gagner chipped in with a pair of assists for the Jets who wrap up their six-game exhibition schedule Friday in Calgary. Winnipeg will open the 2022-23 National Hockey League season Friday, October 14th at home against the New York Rangers.
The 2022 Major League Baseball regular season schedule is over. The Toronto Blue Jays split a doubleheader with Baltimore Wednesday afternoon. The Orioles won the opener 5-4 while the Jays took the second game 5-1. Toronto finished in second place in the American League's East Division with a record of 92-70. The Blue Jays host the Seattle Mariners Friday in game one of the AL's best-of-three Wild Card Series. All three games (if needed) will be in Toronto on the weekend.
