William Simmer
August 17, 1933 – November 12, 2022

It is with deep sadness that the family of William “Bill” Simmer is announcing his passing. He died peacefully in his sleep Saturday evening, November 12, 2022. He was 89 years old. Born to Frank and Agnes (née Tuchscherer) Simmer on August 17, 1933, Bill spent his early years in Tribune, SK. In 1938 the family moved to the Englefeld farm. Bill married Hilda Schedlosky in 1956, and she continued teaching locally. By 1957 Bill was farming on the Simmer and Schedlosky land. Bill and Hilda had four girls: Patricia, Jenette, Sharon, and Elaine. In 1960 he moved his family to Humboldt which became a home base to farming both homesteads for the better part of his life. Bill’s favourite pastime was fishing. His warm smile shone as he would masterly catch more fish than anyone on the boat. That happened many more times than not. Every daughter, grandchild, and most nieces and nephews caught their first fish with him. Other activities Bill enjoyed included camping, square dancing, playing cards and curling. Another favourite pastime was travel; Bill and Hilda visited many parts of Canada and the United States. For 13 years, during some of the cold winter months, they managed to escape to Apache Junction, Arizona. The Caribbean, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and the Panama Canal were also some of the destinations they visited. Bill belonged to the Knights of Columbus for many years. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow Knights every Sunday evening and he earned a lifetime membership during that time. Thank you to the honour guard that will be attending the Mass. Before and during retirement, Bill always looked forward to going for coffee at Tran’s. A special thank you goes to John Seir who drove him there every day after he was unable to drive. Bill spent his last two years at Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake. The staff there did a stupendous job of caring for him. The Simmer family thanks you from the bottom of their hearts. Bill will be remembered and thought of with a smile forever by his four daughters: Patricia (Leo) (nee Stolz) Niekamp, Jenette Simmer, Sharon (Dana) Stuckel, and Elaine Simmer; eight grandchildren: Evan, Rae Ann, Alyssa, Todd, Kelsey, Richelle, Dane, and Mallory; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is survived by two sisters and a brother: Elizabeth Turner of Regina, SK, Irene Saunders of Hamilton, ON, and Ray Simmer of Saskatoon, SK. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Frances Doyscher of Chilliwack, BC; and his aunt, Beth Ehrmantraut. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Hilda (née Schedlosky) Simmer; sister-in-law, Lorraine Loehr; and by four brothers-in-law: Ralph Doyscher, Eugene Loehr, Doug Saunders, and David Turner. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at 1:30 p.m., celebrated by Fr. John Ezeoruonye. Others taking part were: William Simmer, cross bearer; Jenette Simmer and Elaine Simmer, scripture readers; Sharon Stuckel, intentions; Taya Simmer and Kane Simmer, gift bearers; Todd Simmer, urn bearer. Music ministry was provided by director Loretta Schugmann, pianist Carol Esler, and members of the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Bill’s life”. An honour guard was formed by members of the Knights of Columbus. Interment followed at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery, Humboldt. The memorial luncheon was held at the St. Augustine Parish Hall. The eulogy was delivered by Patricia Niekamp. Memorial donations may be directed to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan (2308 Arlington Ave., Saskatoon, SK, S7J 3L3), the Heart and Stroke Foundation (#26 – 1738 Quebec Ave., Saskatoon, SK, S7K 1V9), or to Bethany Pioneer Village (PO Box 8, Middle Lake, SK, S0K 2X0).
