Awareness of the importance of maintaining a stable supply of water for our communities in the Pembina and Red River Valleys has become apparent over the last number of years. That makes the Stanley Corridor Reservoir Project an important step forward in that regard.
The 4 million litre, 6-cell, buried concrete reservoir under construction adjacent to the Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC) is progressing well, and is anticipated to be completed by the end of next July.
"It will be good for our whole region here," said RM of Stanley Reeve Ike Friesen. "The hospital will be one of the big users, but also for future development, we will be supplying water from that reservoir to the northwest" Friesen also highlighted the location of the reservoir allows for it to be used to balance flows and pressure, as they can change some valving and adjust pressures for North and West of Morden, Schanzenfeld and Reinfeld and back feed into areas if the need arises.
Southern Health-Santé Sud transferred land at no cost to the RM for the reservoir, as well as a new feed being established to assist with hospital expansion that is now underway.
The reservoir will receive water directly from two independent treatment plants from the Pembina Valley Water Co-op (PVWC) - (Morris and Letellier). Friesen noted the giant underground reservoir will also help for future developments and managing peak day demands allowing for consistent pressures even if there is an interruption in PVWC supply.
The total cost of the $6.4 - million project is being cost shared 50/50 between the RM of Stanley and Manitoba Water Services Board (MWSB).
In 2021, the PVWC supplied the new 12” line coming in from Roland (Morris supply), another example of the community partnership with the Stanley Corridor Reservoir project.
