Six provincial high school varsity volleyball champions were crowned Saturday.
The Treherne Tigers beat Wawanesa 19-25, 25-19, 15-13 in the “A” boys final in Elm Creek. Treherne went through the event undefeated. The host Cobras lost to Alonsa/McCreary in the quarterfinals. Quin Enns of the Cobras received the Players Choice award. Alonsa/McCreary lost in the semi-finals. The Deloraine Colts defeated Hamiota 14-25, 25-23, 15-11 in the “A” girls championship game in Gretna.
The Major Pratt Trojans girls and Landmark 96ers boys captured the Provincial “AA” championships in The Pas. The Trojans beat the Hapnot Kopper Queens of Flin Flon 25-19, 25-18 while the 96ers defeated Gabrielle Roy Les Roy 25-23, 19-25, 15-9. The Rosenort Redhawks beat Gabrielle Roy 26-24, 25-21 in the girls third-place game. Rosenort swept Hapnot 25-12, 26-24 in the boys third-place game. William Morton Collegiate of Gladstone lost in the quarter-finals of the boys event while Warren Collegiate suffered the same fate on the girls side.
The Westgate Wings beat College Beliveau 25-14, 25-15 in the “AAA” girls championship game in Neepawa. The Linden Christian Wings defeated Transcona 18-25, 25-16, 18-16 in the “AAA” boys final in Steinbach.
The Portage Terriers are back in the win column. The Dogs braved the cold and conquered the OCN Blizzard Saturday night on home ice, coming away with a 7-2 victory. It was the Terriers' annual Teddy Bear Toss Game in support of the Salvation Army, and it took only 2:48 of game time before the stuffed animals hit the ice. The U18 female Capitals are at a hockey tournament in Pilot Mound this weekend. They were shut out in both of their games yesterday losing 8-0 to Balmoral Hall and 4-0 to the Interlake Lightning. The team plays today at 12:45 p.m. against Pilot Mound.
The Pembina Valley Twisters gave up four first period goals and lost 8-3 to the St. James Canucks in Morris. The defending Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League champions scored three times on the power play and once shorthanded. Derek Wiebe, Zander Carels and Jacob Carels did the goal scoring for the Twisters.
The Warren Mercs and Ste. Anne Aces were winners in the SEMHL Saturday night. Brock Couch scored the go-ahead goal 8:15 into the third period as Warren edged Morden 4-3. Carson Ouellette added a pair of goals for the defending champion Mercs while Braydon MacDonald had the other Warren goal. Adam Hughesman scored twice for the Bombers and drew an assist on Mike Rey’s first period goal. Ste. Anne jumped out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 5-2 victory over Winkler. Owen Blocker, Braden Purtill, Alex Tetrault, Brett Meilleur and Keith Grondin did the goal scoring for the Aces who moved into sole possession of first place with a 6-1-0-2 record. Jordan Peters and Mitch Doell replied for the Royals.
In the Tiger Hills Hockey League – Dakota Scheirlinck had two goals and an assist as the Hartney Blues beat the Melita Bisons 5-2; Justin Kelbert scored twice and Owen Anderson had three assists as the Pilot Mound Pilots downed the Souris 6-2; Matt Saler had a goal and two asssists in the Minnedosa Bombers 3-2 victory over the Wawanesa Jets; Devon LeBlanc had five goals and three assists as the Virden Oil Kings downed the Cartwright Clippers 14-7 and the Rivers Jets doubled up on the MacGregor Wild 6-3.
Carson Bjarnason made 38 saves and Brett Hyland and Nolan Ritchie scored two goals each as the Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Swift Current Broncos 4-2 at Westoba Place. Conor Geekie scored his second goal of the game on the power play with 2:27 left in the third period and that proved to be the winner as the Winnipeg Ice downed the Prince Albert Raiders 6-4. Matthew Savoie scored twice for the Ice while Ty Nash chipped in with three assists.
Greg Meireles scored the go-ahead goal with 2:38 remaining in regulation as the Manitoba Moose shaded the Milwaukee Admirals 3-2. Nicholas Jones and Wyatt Bongiovanni also scored for the Moose who outshot the Admirals 31-21.
Matt Dunstone of Winnipeg, John Shuster of Duluth, Clancy Grandy of Vancouver and Nancy Martin of Saskatoon won “A” event qualifiers Saturday at the DEKALB Superspiel in Morris. The event continues today and wraps up tomorrow with the finals.
