The Alberta Dance & Drama Academy is ringing in the holidays with their 12 Days Of Christmas promotion, where kids can come in and try out 12 different dance and drama classes.

“It helps boost confidence so much. Gives kids an outlet to express themselves,” says Erica Hendry, owner and instructor at Alberta Dance & Drama Academy.

Hendry has owned the Alberta Dance Academy since 2007 when the original founder offered to sell her the business.

“I had always planned to have my own studio,” she admits, “The opportunity came quicker than I anticipated. But I couldn’t say no! And now here we are!”

Like most businesses in recent history, the pandemic changed how the Academy stayed afloat.

“It still brings up a response when I think back,” Hendry shares, “I’m sure that’s the same for everybody. My staff and team were amazing. We’re so much closer now because of that experience. I could really lean on them.”

As classes shifted to online and in-person capacities fluctuated from day to day, funds were poured into screens, headsets, mixing boards… any and all tools that would make teaching easier for the instructors and more accessible to the children and youth. The response from the students was encouraging.

“You’re trying to convince three-year-olds and teenagers that this is great, and I applaud them for enduring those challenging times.”

Adjusted events included a parking lot performance for competitive students, an online play, and even a drive-in performance at the High River Drive-In in June of 2021.

“We hosted eight studios and two dance competitions. On a spacious stage can be projected on a 50-foot LED screen! It was fast and furious, and the hottest couple of weeks in June I’d ever seen. It was great, I got to see so many other studios share their joy. And the parents loved it- just tailgating and watching a show!”

Newer to the Academy is the addition of drama classes and a musical theatre program, in hopes of giving children more performing art choices and opportunities.

Dance class availability starts at age two, with drama classes available for ages five and up. Dance options include hip hop, acro, ballet, tap and lyrical to name a few.

The 12 Days Of Christmas promotion is a great way for parents and children alike to explore the Academy.

“This gives parents a chance to let their kids dip their toes into each class, without that fear of commitment or losing money that so many parents go through,” Hendry jokes. “You know, you sign them up, you buy all the gear, and then your kid tells you that they don’t like it.”

Hendry hopes to foster relationships with each student and parent that walks through their doors. The studio strives for strong community involvement and is always looking for ways to share and connect with those around them.

“Our open door policy means open communication,” Hendry explains. “We are always available to answer any questions or concerns. We very much want to know what your experience is at Alberta Dance & Drama Academy. We want to help make it the best it can be.”
