Harland Schmidt
October 31, 1938 - December 12, 2022
Harland James Schmidt was born to Adolph and Edith (nee Myatt) Schmidt on October 31, 1938, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He grew up on the family farm south of Carmel, SK, and attended Golden Acre School which was located on the home quarter. After completing his education, he continued to help on the farm, and also worked as a rural lineman for the Golden Acre Telephone Co.
During that time, Harland met Marlene Konner at a local dance. They were married in Humboldt on July 7, 1962. Together they enjoyed many hours of dancing and socializing over the years.
They raised four children while building their mixed farm operation on the family homestead. His love of and devotion to farming was unwavering. He continued to be involved on the farm until his passing. Harland was very active in the community. He served on the Glynfield Community Center Committee, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Committee, the Carmel School Board and the Humboldt Co-op Association Board of Directors. He readily volunteered for any task at hand, whether it was helping a neighbour, building a school skating rink, or driving his grandchildren to sporting events.
When Harland wasn’t working on the farm, he enjoyed dancing, curling, making homemade sausage and going to chuck wagon and chariot races. His most cherished times were those spent with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He was quick to tease, loved to laugh and was very soft-hearted. Harland passed away peacefully on December 12, 2022, at St. Paul’s Hospital surrounded by his family.
Harland is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 60 years, Marlene (nee Konner) Schmidt; son Glen (Colleen) Schmidt and grandchildren, Kristin, Andrew, Marla, Kyla (Kurtis), great-grandchildren Olivia and Victoria; son Lorne (Beverley) Schmidt and grandchildren, Chantale (Ryan), Shaun (Shaunna), and great-grandchildren Stella and Wyatt; daughter Gwen (Lyle) Sawicki and grandchild Kelsey (Tristan); son Lyle (Tara) Schmidt and grandchildren Cole and Bryn; sister-in-law Rita Schmidt; sister-in-law Betty Konner; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
