Logan Budz scored in triple overtime to lift Portage Collegiate past the Pembina Tigers 4-3 in Pilot Mound. Alex Van Deynze, JJ Oke and Kevin Vince also scored for the Trojans who swept the best-of-three semifinal in two straight and will face the Morden Thunder in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League final. Tanner Anderson scored twice in regulation for the Tigers. Brad Sloane had the other Pembina goal.
The Morden Bombers will meet the Ste. Anne Aces in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League final. Mike Rey scored three times and Reed Peters made 46 saves as Morden downed the Warren Mercs 6-2. Adam Hughesman, Cole Penner and Steve Mullin also scored for the hometown Bombers who took the best-of-five semifinal three games to one. Darren Bestland and Brenden Luschinski replied for the Mercs.
Brody Beauchemin scored twice as the Winkler Flyers doubled up on the Selkirk Steelers 4-2. Zachary Brault and Jayce Legaarden had the other Flyers goals. Aidan Comeau made 36 saves in net for Winkler.
Hockey Manitoba Provincial Championships on this weekend in Portage. The CO-ED Under-11 Rural AA Championship is happening at Stride Place. Others in the area include the CO-ED Under-15 Rural AA in Winkler and Rural A in Morden.
The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice both lost Friday night. Brandon gave up four unanswered second period goals and fell 6-3 to the Red Deer Rebels. Nate Danielson, Rylen Roersma and Nolan Flamand scored for the Wheat Kings. The Ice dropped a 5-3 decision to Regina. Pats captain Connor Bedard had four goals and an assist. Easton Armstrong, Matthew Savoie and Carson Lambos did the goal scoring for Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg Jets losing streak has reached five games. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two goals and two assists as the Edmonton Oilers downed Winnipeg 6-3. Mark Scheifele, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby and Brenden Dillon scored for the Jets. The two teams play again tonight in Winnipeg.
The Manitoba Moose lost 4-1 to Chicago. Cole Maier had the lone goal for the Moose. Wolves goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov made 39 saves and scored an empty net shorthanded goal at 16:42 of the third period.
Both Manitoba teams play their round robin openers this afternoon at the Brier in London, Ontario. Matt Dunstone will meet Kelly Knapp of Saskatchewan and Reid Carruthers will face Tanner Horgan of Northern Ontario. Last night defending champion Brad Gushue edged former World Junior champion Jacques Gauthier of BC 6-5 and former Manitoba champion Mike McEwen, who is playing out of Ontario, defeated Felix Asselin of Quebec 13-2.
