A few more flurries and some blowing snow is likely Sunday
Categories

Pembina Valley and western Red River Valley residents are waking up Sunday morning to quite the dump of snow from Saturday's potent low-pressure system which impacted the region for much of the day. As of 10:45 a.m. Sunday, essentially all highways in our region were reopened. Highways throughout the region are reported as partly snow covered, with some blowing and drifting snow.

"Yesterday's snowfall event played out pretty much how we expected," said CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner Sunday morning. "One thing which was a little outside expectations was how quickly and sharply the snowfall cut-off once you got into Southeastern Manitoba. Amounts in the Steinbach area and northeastward were substantially less than what was received in the Altona, Winkler, Morden corridor, and then along the international border to the Manitoba escarpment. We were expecting less snow in that southeastern corner, but what we're hearing this morning is the transition from a lot to less is pretty sharp. Early estimates are pegging snowfall in the 15-20cm range west of the Red and along the U.S. border, right into southwestern Manitoba."

With the system now well to our southeast, over Minnesota and Wisconsin, parts of Southern Manitoba will feel the impacts of the backside of the low today.

"Flurries will continue until noon-ish for areas right along the U.S. border in the Red River Valley and far southeastern corner of the province," he added. "As those end, we're expecting northeasterly winds to pick-up by late morning, gusting between 30 and 50km/h. That means we will more than likely see blowing snow and reduced visibility today, perhaps not to the same extent as Saturday afternoon, but still less than ideal."

Sunshine is expected by late Sunday afternoon, with below average temperatures, landing between -7 and -9. Sumner noted similar daytime highs are expected Monday, before warming up slightly for the remainder of the week, but still below seasonal. -1 daytime and -10 overnight is where we should be for this time of year.
