The City of Fort Saskatchewan will be changing up their waste collection schedule this weekend.
Starting Saturday (Apr. 1), the city will be moving back to its weekly organic, or green cart, waste collection.
"Residents are encouraged to use their green carts for all organic materials and not just yard waste," said Sadie Miller, the waste program supervisor for the city. "Everything from your food scraps to soiled paper products can be placed in your green cart."
Something that people often overlook when it comes to green carts is the soiled paper products. This includes things such as paper plates.
"Soiled pizza boxes, anything with grease [can go into the carts]," said Miller. "As long as it doesn't have a wax coating or plastic layer, it can go into your green cart."
The contents of the green carts are picked up by the city and sent to a composting facility.
"The materials get turned until they become usable soil and then they are applied onto farmer fields as a soil amendment," said Miller.
All residents that live in a single detached house or participate in the curbside waste program will have a green cart.
"[Residents] are highly encouraged to use their green carts to help reduce the waste going to the landfill."
The city will also have two weeks of spring extra yard waste collection coming up in the next few months. The first week will take place from April 24 to 28.
"Residents are able out an unlimited amount of yard waste in brown paper bags in addition to their green carts on these weeks," said Miller. "Accepted materials include grass, leaves, and garden waste."
"I encourage residents who are struggling with green cart capacity to buy some brown paper bags and set aside their yard waste until these collection events."
