Ivan Philip Dale
November 14, 1935 – March 31, 2023
Ivan Philip Dale was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan on November 14, 1935, the eldest of three children born to Philip and Catherine Dale. He grew up on the family farm in the Carmel District and attended Highgate School for his education. He worked alongside his father Philip and grandfather William, helping with the many chores of their mixed farming operation. Ivan enjoyed curling, baseball, bowling, and hockey in his youth. He was a member of the Dixon Dynamos hockey team and he often spoke fondly of being a part of this group of friends. On June 12, 1962, Ivan married Angeline Kuemper at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Muenster, SK. This union resulted in a family of 6 children, four girls and two boys. They were happily married for 59 years until Angie’s passing in 2021. Ivan loved farming and had a deep connection to the land. He lovingly cared for all their farm animals including horses, chickens, pigs, turkeys, dogs, cats, and cows. It took much dedication and discipline to have a dairy herd and going on vacation was never an option. Together with his parents and Angie, he grew large vegetable and flower gardens and they shared the fruits of their labour with family and friends. Ivan learned carpentry skills from his grandfather. He renovated and added rooms to the family home several times over the years. With the help of friends and neighbours, he also built a new barn in 1979 and on a smaller scale, he loved to build toys for the children. Ivan was devoted to his Catholic faith. Prayer was central to his life and it guided everything he did. He served his parish in Carmel in every way possible including parish council, server, choir member, reader, communion minister, fall bazaar and the Mount Carmel committee. He also acted as a lay presider. Ivan believed in the principles of a co-operative and was a lifelong member of the Humboldt Credit Union, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, and the Humboldt Co-op. He served on the Board of Directors for the Co-op for 15 years. Ivan and Angie retired from farming in 2010 and they moved to Humboldt to enjoy a slower pace. They both took up bowling again and enjoyed the fellowship and fun. Ivan joined the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed serving alongside his brother Knights especially at the pancake breakfasts after church. He also sang with the mass choir and the funeral choir at St. Augustine Parish. He volunteered at the Humboldt Soup kitchen preparing meals and visiting with the clients. Music was a huge part of Ivan’s life as many of his extended family played instruments and sang in church and at community events. Ivan had a beautiful singing voice and the gift of a very good ear. He contributed to several choirs and played the drums, violin, and rhythm guitar in many different dance bands throughout his life, spanning a period of about 70 years. He loved to see people having fun and dancing their troubles away. He loved playing, singing, and dancing with his brotherhood of talented musician friends whether it was just jamming at home or performing. In his later years, he and his band mates would spread joy by entertaining in Seniors’ residences in Humboldt and many surrounding towns. It would make dad smile to see the residents dancing or clapping and tapping their toes to the beat. Ivan will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his children and their families: ROSANNE (Larry) Thiel of Humboldt, SK and family: Addison (Adrienne) Thiel of St. Louis, MO, (son Liam), Ebony (Grant) Heffernan of Calgary, AB (children MacAllister and Adley); GLENNA (Brian) Lins of Saskatoon, SK and family: Brittney Lins (Mark Hackett) of Perth, WA(son Anderson), Blake Lins of Saskatoon, SK; SANDRA (Darrell) Athmer of Englefeld, SK and family: Kristin Ochitwa of Humboldt, SK (children Brielle and Lincoln), Bryton Athmer of Regina, SK, Shailynn (Shadow) Reddekopp of Warman, SK, Taevan Athmer of Saskatoon, SK; DARREN (Wendy) Dale and family, all of Saskatoon, SK; Anthony (Alison) Dale (children Leon, Isla, Emmett and Elliot), Tolysha (David) Sapp (children Sawyer, Boston, Axel and Maren), Donovan (Charissa) Dale (children Evie, Linus and Henry), Fabian (Nakia) Dale(daughter Finley), Julian (Kendal) Dale, Emmarae Dale; RAINA (Chris) Dauvin of Saskatoon, SK; daughter-in-law Tamara Dale of Regina, SK (children Avery and Josie).
