Last year, it was announced the City of Winkler received funding to complete a multi-modal transportation plan, and a study currently underway on public transportation is part of that process.

Winkler's Director of Planning and Engineering, Scott Toews says they're reaching out to a number of stakeholder groups, including the public directly to participate in a number of meetings to be held over a period of time.

An online survey is currently underway, and a public open house was held this last week. Toews noted there’s no definite plan at this time, as they’re still very early in the feasibility study process.

Through the meetings and survey, by asking people questions like where they live, where they recreate, and where they do their shopping, Toews says they can begin to develop major patterns happening in Winkler's transportation network.

The next step is to come up with a variety of options for evaluation, and then provide that feedback in the next round of public stakeholder meetings.

In general, in terms of the conversations had so far, Toews says a number of gaps in the city's transportation network were identified. "Like padded sidewalks in industrial areas," he said. "But also transportation needs for those that don't have a vehicle or only have one vehicle in their household. So, what kind of services are available to support those people as well?"

Toews added their vision for the plan is mobilizing Winkler, and moving people affordably and efficiently.
