The Winnipeg Jets gave up three third period goals and dropped a 5-2 decision to Vegas. Golden Knights captain and Winnipeg native Mark Stone had two goals and an assist. Chandler Stephenson, William Karlsson and Jack Eichel also scored for Vegas. Adam Lowry and Kevin Stenlund did the goal scoring for the Jets who led 1-0 after the first period. The game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes. The NHL’s best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal is tied at one. Game three goes Saturday afternoon at Canada Life Centre

The Manitoba Moose begin their quest for the Calder Cup tonight when they meet the Milwaukee Admirals at Canada Life Centre in game one of their best-of-five Central Division semifinal.

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best-of seven final for the Turnbull Cup will begin this weekend. The Virden Oil Capitals and Steinbach Pistons will meet Saturday and Sunday at the T.G. Smith Centre. The series then shifts to Tundra Oil & Gas Place next week Wednesday and Thursday.

Canada plays Germany today at the 2023 World U18 Hockey Championship in Switzerland. Team Canada lost its preliminary round opener 8-0 to Sweden on Thursday. Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Carson Bjarnason got the start in net against the defending champions. The Carberry native was pulled after giving up his fifth goal of the game 13:28 into the first period.

Sport Manitoba held its annual Night of Champions Thursday. This special event is a celebration of the highest achievements Manitobans have made in amateur sport last year. Trevis Boyd from Speed Skating was recognized as the Official of the Year; the Volunteer of the Year is Stephan Ceslak from baseball; Coach of the Year is Janine Stephens from rowing; Madi Lawrence, who shattered a 33-year old Canada Summer Games record in Heptathlon is the Athlete of the Year and Kerri Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris, who won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts for the fourth straight year and captured bronze medals at the World Championship, are the Team of the Year.
