First responders in Strathcona County played in a charity hockey game for a good cause on Friday (Apr. 21) night.
Firefighters and paramedics went up against police officers in a game at the Sherwood Park arena to raise money for the family of Constable Harvinder Singh Dhami, who lost his life while responding to a call in early April.
Nathan Gauvreau with the Strathcona County Professional Firefighters Association said that the event was incredibly successful.
"We had a pretty awesome turnout from the community, and it was really well received and a great tribute to our fallen comrade."
The game ended with a win for the firefighters and paramedics at a score of 4-1. In total, around $4,200 was raised for the family.
"Admission was charged with any cash donation people could help us out with. I think we had just shy of 200 people attend," said Gauvreau.
At the end of the game, the first responders donated the funds towards Dhami's GoFundMe, which is just a few thousand dollars shy of its $40,000 goal.
With the success of the fundraiser, Gauvreau hopes they can do something similar next year.
"One person's charity would be per year, maybe we would do muscular dystrophy."
