Yellow bags are returning to doorsteps for another City Wide Food Drive.
This week, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is dropping off bags at residences all over Fort Saskatchewan (except for apartments) to garner donations for the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank.
Residents are asked to fill these bags with non-perishable food items and to leave them outside their front doors before 10 a.m. on Saturday (Apr. 29).
"Every little bit really does help," said Kassandra Gartner, executive director of the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank. "We're not asking for individuals to have cases of product, it's just a little bit from every household really does add up and it goes a long way."
This annual event has been turned into a semi-annual event for the first time due to the growing volume of households that the food bank is feeding.
In the last City Wide Food Drive, the food bank took in over 15,000 pounds of donations. In 2021's food drive, a whopping 18,000 pounds was donated.
Gartner added that they've already got all the volunteers they need.
"A food drive of this scale does not happen without many people giving their time and using their vehicles, and those who are filling their bags with food."
Specific items that are needed include:
- Instant oatmeal
- Small jars of jam
- Kraft Dinner
- Juice
- Canned fruit
- Canned meat
- Sidekicks
- Coffee
