A mobile mammography service will be visiting both Fort Saskatchewan and Morinville this month.

The service will first be offered at the Morinville Clinic from June 16 to 20 before coming to the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital between June 21 to 24.

A mammogram is essentially an X-ray of the breast tissue.

Chidi Okoli, the health promotion facilitator with Alberta Health Services, says mammograms are very important in identifying and treating breast cancer.

"Having routine mammograms has been proven to be the most effective way to find breast cancer early," said Okoli. "When the tumour is still small and before the symptoms even develop, at this stage there are more treatment options, so the individual has higher chances of survival and better health outcomes."

"Mammograms can save lives."

Women aged 45 to 74 will have access to the service due to being the group most at risk of developing breast cancer.

Women aged 40 to 44 can also use the service but will need a referral from a healthcare professional.

Although the service is free, appointments are required. You can set up an appointment by calling 1-800-667-0604.
