Colton Dach and the Seattle Thunderbirds couldn't get it done in the Memorial Cup final against the Quebec Remparts.

A slew of local athletes were not able to capture junior hockey's greatest prize over the weekend.

Three players from the area were involved in the Memorial Cup tournament.

Fort Saskatchewan's Colton Dach and Ardrossan native Jordan Gustafson playing in the championship game on Sunday with the Seattle Thunderbirds while Olen Zellweger, another Fort Sask kid, bowed out after losing a heartbreaking tiebreaker with the Kamloops Blazers.

The championship game between the WHL champion, Seattle Thunderbirds and the QMJHL champion, Quebec Remparts was expected to be fierce, as both teams played very well in the tournament leading up to the title match, but it didn't quite go as expected.

The first period was energetic for both teams, but the Remparts were the only ones to get on the board with Vsevolod Komarov scoring on a 2-on-1 opportunity.

From there it was all Quebec as they scored four more unanswered goals to shut out the Thunderbirds 5-0 and win their third memorial cup in franchise history.

Despite the loss, Seattle head coach Matt O'Dette is still extremely proud of the team for coming this far.

"I can't say enough about the character in that room and the leadership we have in there," said O'Dette. "I think there is a lot to be proud of when the dust settles."

"WHL champions, can't take that away from us."

Gustafson had two goals and three points in five games throughout the tournament while Colton Dach had a pair of goals in that same stretch.

Over in Kamloops, Zellweger showed very well with a goal and four points in just four games.

All three players have NHL aspirations next year as Gustafson will try to crack the Vegas Golden Knights roster, Dach will go to camp with the Chicago Blackhawks, and Zellweger could have a great chance at cracking the Anaheim Ducks lineup.
