With some communities deciding to lift fire bans while others are reinstating fire bans, what is happening where can become confusing.
As of Wednesday (June 14), there are not a lot of regions that are still under a fire ban with recent wet weather prompting the implementation of a fire restriction in its place.
A fire restriction allows people to use outdoor firepits and permits all types of barbecues. The only restriction with these activities is that all fire pits must be in a non-combustible structure, have a screen, and be located at least three metres away from structures, fences, decks, or trees.
Larger fires, such as bonfires, brushfires, burn barrels, and fireworks are not allowed during fire restrictions.
The following communities are currently under a fire restriction:
- Fort Saskatchewan
- Morinville
- Redwater
- Bon Accord
A fire ban, on the other hand, prohibits all types of open fires and burning. All fire permits are also suspended under a fire ban.
Propane barbecues are still permitted for cooking purposes but must be supervised at all times during use.
On Thursday (June 15), Strathcona County moved from a fire ban to a fire advisory, which allows all open fires and burning. However, some fire permits are still suspended. All permit holders are asked to call the Burning Status Line (780-464-8464) to make sure burning is allowed.
That same day, the Town of Bruderheim also removed their fire ban entirely.
