Falynn Short was declared the valedictorian for the class of 2023 at Lamont High.
Short grew up in Bruderheim, attending Bruderheim Elementary before heading into Lamont High.
"It's very small. Everybody knew everybody, which lead to a close community, which is nice," said Short. "There was a lot of support from the teachers."
Going to school during the COVID-19 pandemic, Short said changed the dynamic in how students were taught.
"Going online was certainly not fun, but going back was a little bit harder because we weren't used to having that high school experience," stated Short. "We were able to slack off a lot in online classes, and then coming back to school we didn't have that much opportunity."
Short added that she wasn't expecting to be named as valedictorian.
"I thought that other people had a higher average."
Short's favourite subject was science, specifically chemistry and biology. It was her love for science that drew her to pursue nursing after high school.
"It's a lot of the sciences coming together into one thing," added Short. "I hope to get a registered nursing degree."
Short has been accepted to Northwestern Polytechnic in Grande Prairie, which she'll be heading to in the fall.
