The Fort Saskatchewan region has been hit with a barrage of rain over the last few days.

So much so that Environment Canada felt the need to issue a rainfall warning for the area.

"We have this low-pressure system that has been up in Alberta that has been bringing a little bit of a front and some rain in through the area," said Samantha Mauti, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

"It's quite slow moving, so very slow showers are moving through the area."

Rainfall warnings are generally issued when there are more than 50 millimetres of rain in an area over the course of a day.

"One [weather site] close by was reporting 56.6 millimetres over the last 48 hours so that is how much rain has fallen in the general area," said Mauti. "I think we have already seen just less than 20 [millimetres] this morning and we are expecting another 15 to 25 in the area for the rest of today."

Though the rain is expected to continue to fall today, it does appear we are on the backend of the weather system causing the showers.

"It starts to weaken tomorrow and move out of the area," said Mauti. "Wednesday is still expecting cloudy conditions and possibility of showers and then it looks like things start to clear out toward the end of the week and into the weekend."

In the meantime, Mauti warns that this type of downpour can lead to flash flooding and that people should stay tuned to their local news stations for any reports of flooded roads are areas.
