A Fort Saskatchewan soccer team is awaiting their fate.
The U15 Fort Saskatchewan Buster's Pizza girls' team played in a thrilling match on Wednesday (June 21) against the St. Albert Impact that ended in a 1-1 tie.
"Both teams are very evenly matched," said Robert Hall, the vice president of Fort Sask Soccer. "We've played them during the indoor season a number of times and games have all been very close."
A win would have solidified the girls a spot in provincials, but a draw means that they no longer control their fate.
"A tie leaves us waiting for a shootout that is going to happen next Wednesday between Callingwood and one of the lower-tiered teams," said Hall. "If Callingwood loses, Fort Sask goes to provincials, if Callingwood wins then Fort Sask goes to the city finals."
"Either way, a Fort team is going to be playing for something."
Fort Sask was actually losing late in the game against St. Albert. With just five minutes left to go, Olivia Boyden soared a free kick from about 35 yards out over the top of the St. Albert keeper.
Not being able to control their own destiny might sound stressful, but the girls have apparently taken it in stride.
"They are excited about the opportunity," said Hall. "To make it for provincials for this group is quite an accomplishment because a majority of the girls are first-year U15 or even U13 girls that were brought up to help form a team."
"Any opportunity for a postseason is exciting."
Hall is also in awe of how the team has come together to put forth such an impressive season, regardless of where they end up.
"This group is an amazing group of young ladies," said Hall. "They are kind, passionate, and welcoming to any new players on the squad this year."
"Everything you can ever ask for in a team, this group of girls is it."
