The 2023 Fort Saskatchewan Municipal Census has revealed a population change in the city.

After two months of canvassing the city and ensuring no resident was left behind, the census revealed that the current population of Fort Saskatchewan sits at 28,624 residents.

"This represents a significant increase of 6.24% compared to the municipal census conducted in 2019 and a notable growth of 4.22% from the 2021 Federal census," said the city in a press release.

Mayor Gale Katchur is ecstatic with the number as it shows a higher number of people are choosing to move to Fort Saskatchewan.

"Fort Saskatchewan's allure as a preferred destination for new residents is undeniable," said Katchur. "Our city's welcoming atmosphere, exceptional quality of life, and top-notch amenities have contributed to this ongoing positive trend."

"We are committed to fostering a sense of community that continues to attract and embrace all newcomers."

This marks the first time that the city has breached the 28,000 mark. The 2019 municipal census showed the population to be 26,942 while the latest federal census, conducted in 2021, had the city's population pegged at 27,088.

This shows a consistent and significant increase over the last four years.

"I think we are having a nice, average growth at this time," said Katchur. "That means that we are able to slowly add the infrastructure that we require to be able to sustain the growth that's coming."

The city plans on using this information to help in the planning process of future initiatives and to secure essential government funding.

A comprehensive report on the full census results is expected to be released in August.
