Evelyn Merkosky
May 11, 1923 – July 31, 2023
Evelyn Rose (née Lutz) Merkosky was born May 11, 1923, to Otto and Matilda (née Ebner) Lutz of Carmel, Saskatchewan. She attended school in Carmel until Grade 9 and went to work at St. Elizabeth Hospital, in Humboldt, SK. One and a half years after, she had the opportunity for a position at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, SK, which she took and while there she took business classes as well. When she finished the business classes, she moved to Edmonton General Hospital from 1943 -1949. She married Albert Merkosky in 1949 and settled on a farm in the Burr area and raised Rick and Darlene together. In 1962 she moved into Humboldt where she worked for Humboldt Co-op in the accounting office until she retired in 1987. In retirement, Evelyn took up golf and cross-country skiing, and as a couple she and Albert bowled regularly. Family was very important to Evelyn as was, “keeping in touch”. Strong faith and a healthy diet enabled her to celebrate her 100th birthday with family and friends surrounding her. Evelyn will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by: her son Rick (Monica) Merkosky, and family: Simon (Kayla), their children Claire and Sadie; Jacob (Jacqui), their children: Kaleb, Ryatt, Ryker and Aria; Luke (Joanna) their children: Elliot, Mackson and Ozzie, and Hannah (David) Gray-Jewitt; her daughter Darlene Derouin, and family: Jason (Erin), their son Devin; Curtis (Bonnie), their children: Daytona, Dayla and Riley; Zachery (Amanda), their children: Kendall and Raya; her brother Ozwald (Lorna) Lutz; sisters-in-law: Chris Dust, Helen Dobni, Anita Lutz, and Rose Merkosky; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by: husband of 62 years Albert; grandson, Travis Derouin; parents, Otto and Matilda; sisters: Elenor, Florence, Irene, Annette, and Leona; brothers: Theodore and Anthony; parents-in-law, Charles and Helen Merkosky; many in-laws of the Merkosky family; and many nieces and nephews. Prayers were held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 7:30 p.m., with Bev Trach presiding; Diane, Al Gantner and Rob Muench, scripture readers, and Carol Esler provided organ music. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy. Others taking part were: Randy Lutz, cross bearer; Diane, Al Gantner and Rob Muench, scripture readers; Jason Derouin and Jake Merkosky, prayers of the faithful; Al Gantner and Patrice Harelkin, gift bearers; and Josie Stroeder, memorial table attendant. Music ministry was provided by The St. Augustine Funeral Choir, with Lorretta Schugmann, director and Carol Esler, pianist. Pallbearers were Simon Merkosky, Jake Merkosky, Luke Merkocky, David Gray-Lewitt, Zac Derouin and Jason Derouin; and honorary pallbearers were “All who shared in Evelyn’s life.”, with an honor guard provided by the Catholic Women’s League. Interment followed at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery in Humboldt, SK. Following was a memorial luncheon at St. Augustine Parish Hall with Rick Merkosky and Darlene Derouin as eulogists.
