The Garden Valley School Division (GVSD) has a returning board chair for the upcoming school year. Trustee Leah Klassen will remain in the role for a second consecutive year after being appointed by acclamation during the Board's reorganizational meeting on Tuesday night,
Klassen said she feels excited to have been chosen by her peers around the table and feels the board has built a great team so far. "We have a fantastic group of people around the table, and I'm looking forward to what next year brings."
Trustees were also appointed to lead the Board's three standing committees, including one revamped committee.
"In the past, we've had three standing committees, Operations, Policy and Education. We have changed that now," said Klassen.
During an evaluation meeting in spring, Klassen noted the Board looked at what was important going forward. Although Policy is absolutely important, she said that will now be handled through an Ad Hoc committee. The committee will include three trustees.
Klassen says the board felt it was important to reconnect with their community, and the committee will be working on strategies on how to do that.
The Policy Committee is now the Community Connections Committee.
"So, now we'll have Operation, Education and Community Connections. The board felt it was important to reconnect with our community and they're going to be working at strategies on how to do that."
Trustee Deanna Wilson will head the Community Connections Committee,
Also during Tuesday's reorganizational meeting, John Klassen was acclaimed as Board Vice-Chair. Klassen will also chair the Education Committee, while Trustee Phillip Unrau will lead Operations.
