A decision on the fate of the truck driver held responsible for the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash remains pending after a Federal court judge reserved his decision on Jaskirat Singh Sidhu’s deportation.

In 2019, Sidhu was sentenced to eight years following his plea to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. The April 2018 crash resulted in the deaths of 16 people and injuries to 13 others.

A report by the Canadian Press says that Singh has been granted parole and is working in the construction industry in Calgary while he awaits the decision on whether he can remain in Canada. He is contesting a recommendation by the Canada Border Services Agency that he should be handed over to the Immigration and Refugee Board to determine whether he should be deported to India.

Federal Court Chief Justice Paul Crampton did not specify when he would make releasing his decision a priority given the gravity of the case.

If Sidhu and his counsel are successful, the case will go back to the Canada Border Services Agency for further review.
