Plenty of fun was had on Saturday at Family Fun Day, with proceeds going to the SPCA.

Humboldt and District SPCA teamed up with Humboldt Landscape and Leisure for a fundraiser to support operations and a new building at the pet shelter. A crowd packed the grounds of the business to enjoy the bouncy castles, horse and wagon rides, musical entertainment by Walter Bushman and much more.

The SPCA fundraising component included a barbecue that went from late morning until 4 pm and a garage sale with an extensive layout of donated items. The efforts merged for a great Family Fun Day.

“We had many donated items,” said Joanne Koski with the SPCA. “We’ve had an awesome turnout for both the burgers and the garage sale.”

Koski says a part of the fundraised dollars will be going to meet the daily needs of the shelter. The vet bills can be the bulk of the costs as animals need to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered prior to going up for adoption. The shelter appreciates the donations of food and litter, but sometimes the animals come in with medical needs after being injured or neglected. That’s where money is critical.

“If you go over there right now, you’ll find we’re full – we have a freeze on taking in both cats and dogs,” Koski says. “We’ve worked with Animal Protection Services who wanted us to have bigger kennels, so that reduces the number of dogs we can have in our facility now. That makes it even more of a challenge.”

The key to helping alleviate some of these constraints is a new facility, says Koski.

“A new facility would allow us to bring in our own income. Right now, we can’t really earn income except through adoptions, so we operated mostly on donations and fundraisers. Hopefully, if we get our new building, we can look at kenneling services or altering our own animals.”

The Humboldt and District SPCA currently does a fundraiser almost every month. So thanks from the SPCA to everyone who came out to Saturday’s event, and watch for future events and opportunities to help out.
