Due to an increase in vaccine supplies, the Ontario government is accelerating their vaccine roll-out for early second doses.

As of Monday, residents turning 70 and over in 2021, as well as individuals who received their first dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine before April 18, will be able to book an early second dose ahead of schedule through the provincial booking system.

As well, effective today, these groups are also able to receive an accelerated second dose through local pharmacies. Residents who received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine can also schedule their second dose of either AstraZeneca, Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

“This is great news for our region as residents continue to take advantage of securing their vaccinations across Kenora-Rainy River," said MPP Greg Rickford. "Another important step forward to re-opening. Thanks to the Northwestern Health Unit, pharmacies and all involved in the distribution efforts."

On June 1, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization updated its guidance to provinces and territories, saying a first shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine can be followed by a dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.

Ontario says participating pharmacies in northwestern Ontario include:

- No Frills in Kenora – Moderna (18+)
- Shoppers Drug Mart in Kenora – Pfizer (12+)
- The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Kenora – Moderna (18+)

- Shoppers Drug Mart in Dryden – Pfizer (12+)
- Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Dryden – Moderna (18+)

- Rexall in Sioux Lookout – Moderna (18+)
- Rx Drug Mart in Sioux Lookout – Moderna (18+)
- Sioux Lookout Remedy’s Rx – Moderna (18+)

Eligible groups are asked to use Ontario’s vaccine booking system to find out how to schedule an appointment or can call the Provincial Vaccine Booking Line number at 1-833-943-3900.
