The Humboldt Broncos returned to the win column with a convincing victory over the Yorkton Terriers on Tuesday night.
In their third road game of the season, the Broncos corralled into Westland Insurance Arena and tamed the Yorkton Terriers in all areas of the game, scoring two shorthanded goals, two powerplay goals, and three even strength to pick up a 7-2 win.
The Broncos opened up the scoring, the same they have in every game this season, and continued to take over the early going of the game with three first period goals.
Spencer Bell put the Broncos on the board first with his fourth goal of the season. Bell is currently on an eight-game point streak, picking up at least a point in every game this season. He finished the night with a goal and two assists.
Chase Cooke doubled the Broncos’ lead with his second goal of the year. Last season, Cooke scored his first career Jr. A goal as a 19-year-old. He’s now scored twice in his first 5 games in his final season.
Marik Mamic, who just returned from serving a two-game suspension, added the Broncos final goal of the period, intercepting a breakout pass attempt and firing home a shorthanded goal for a 3-0 lead.
The Terriers got their lone push of the game, scoring a late first period goal off a deflection by Aiden Knutson, and then an early second period goal by Anthony McIntosh. However, cutting the lead to 3-2 was as close as Yorkton would get.
The Broncos special teams continued to impress throughout the match. Another shorthanded goal was added by Brayden Skogstad, dancing around Caleb Allen with a beautiful, backhanded breakaway deke.
Connor Thue then regained the Broncos’ two-goal lead with his 4th of the season. Thue, who was just named the SJHL MVP and Defenseman of the Week, added two more points and now has 15 points in his last 6 games.
The powerplay went to work in the third period to help ice the game. Cage Newans scored his 6th goal of the season, and league leading 5th on the powerplay. As the third progressed, Yorkton fell into some frustration, leading to discipline issues and Maddox Amaral was the final nail, tucking his second of the year under the bar for the Broncos 7-2 lead.
Aidan Fischer got his second career SJHL start in net and picked up his second win stopping 18 of 20.
The Broncos powerplay was 2/8 while their PK was a perfect 4/4.
The Broncos will turn their attention to the defending champions with a home-and-home set this weekend with the Battlefords.
