1923- 2021
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend on May 30, 2021.
Helenn leaves to mourn her 3 daughters and 1 step-daughter, Dorothy (Bob-deceased), June (Ken), Carole, Joanne (Ray), her brother Larry (Ellen) of Arizona. She also leaves 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews,
Mom was born on December 22, 1923 to Mike and Eva Yakimovich. She grew up in Narol, Manitoba and attended Donald School. After her schooling took a dress making course at St. John’s Tech. She then married Paul Kosakewich, father of her 4 daughters. She was divorced and married Paul Oneschuk in 1969 and moved to Beausejour, Manitoba. After 4 years they moved to Kenora, Ontario where together they built the Manor Motel, Bel Aire Motel and a cottage on the Lake of the Woods. They enjoyed many great times fishing and hosting parties with family and friends.
After they sold the motels they opened Kenora Quality Furniture for 9 years until Paul’s untimely passing. Mom and Paul made many trips together to Europe, the United States, Mexico, Hawaii and enjoyed many cruises.
Mom was a member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, also the St. Nicholas U.C.W.L., a member of the Lake of the Wood Lions Club, a member of the Lake of the Woods Hospital Auxiliary, member of the CNIB, and of Community Living. She received many awards and plaques for her volunteer work.
Mom loved to golf, bowl and knit for her grandchildren. She loved her flowers and garden. She enjoyed making cabbage rolls with her friends at the Church and decorating the tanles for meetings and other activities.
Mom moved to Benedickson Court in 2020 and enjoyed her stay there, making new friends and renewing friendships.
She was predeceased by her husband Paul, her parents, her sister, Rose Stemken and baby daughter Paulette.
Many thanks to the staff at Benedickson Court and to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital for their care and concern. Also to Dr. Workman for his excellent care throughout the years.
A special thank you to all of her friends for calling her every day and for driving here wherever she needed to go. The family is forever grateful.
Flowers gratefully declined, donations would be appreciated for St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church or the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation.
Due to COVID restrictions a private family service was held on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
