High numbers of vaccination rates have led to lower COVID-19 case numbers across the Northwestern Health Unit catchment area. As of yesterday, there is only 4 active cases across the region.

At a media briefing, Dr. Kit Young Hoon, Medical Officer of the NWHU detailed why case numbers are coming down.

“Low case numbers are good to see, its means what we're doing is working and a large part of low case numbers is due to vaccination,” she explains

Dr. Young Hoon urges the public to see these low case numbers as a call to action and not get complacent.

Dr. Young Hoon adds “To keep numbers low, we must continue to practice all prevention measures, including getting 2nd doses and encouraging others to get vaccinated.”

60,000 doses have been administered across the region, with the health unit sitting at 70 per cent of the population that have received at least one dose and she notes demand is still high for people that want their first dose.

“Approaching zero cases is great, the goal of control measures is to keep spread at a manageable level, to minimize the number of people hospitalized the severally ill and minimize deaths.” Dr. Young Hoon says.

On Friday at 12:01 a.m. Ontario will enter Step One of the Roadmap to Reopen. The province will be in this step for 21 days to evaluate public health and health system indicators.

To move into Step Two, 70 per cent of adults have to have at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 20 per cent of adults have at least 2 doses.
