Portage Fire Department dispatched to burning semi-truck last night
The Portage Fire Department was dispatched after a semi-truck caught fire around 2:30 a.m. on the Trans-Canada Highway near Road 28 West.
Eastbound lanes were closed for a short time in order for the teams to extinguish the fire.
The Portage Fire Department confirms that no injuries were sustained as a result from the fire. The department was there for three hours in order to resolve the situation.
Water services once again disrupted in Portage Friday
The City of Portage la Prairie is carrying on with more disruptions of water services today.
Starting at 9 a.m. the area of 10th Street NW from Lorne Avenue W to Saskatchewan Avenue W will have to deal with the disruption of water services due to water main construction.
The city notes that they intend to have the water services restored by the end of the day (Friday.)
RCMP MB July report: West District shows hefty increase of thefts
The Manitoba RCMP released its monthly report for July showing calls for service in the West District, which includes Portage la Prairie, is up 1 per cent from July of last year, numbering from 5,408 to 5,481 calls.
Portage looking to add new businesses to Welcome to Portage packages
The City of Portage la Prairie, along with the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) and the Portage Local Immigration Partnership (PLIP), are on the look out for new businesses to add to their "Welcome Wagon" portfolio.
Cultural Integration Coordinator with PLIP Megan Romphf explains that a welcome wagon is a package of business cards, coupons and other pamphlets handed out to new residents of Portage after paying their first water bill.

PCRC's Green Team summer students wrapping up duties
After months of cleaning up vandalism around the community, the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation's (PCRC) Green Team's summer students are preparing for the off-season.
PCRC cultural connector Megan Romphf says that their Green Team's summer students, Anthony and Adam, are in their last week of service.
IIU investigating allegations of assault by MFNP officer
The Internal Investigations Unit (IIU) is investigating an alleged assault by an on-service Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MFNP) officer.
IIU says on August 16th, the MFNP reported an incident to them which took place earlier that day.
According to the report, a woman was in custody at the MFNP cells when she became aggressive, which led to the police needing to use force to secure her. During this time, she sustained a cut to her head and was transported to the Portage General Hospital, then released back into custody after being treated.
Portage parent blown away as children take in the world at Stride Place
Last week, Portage children aged 5-12 got the chance to explore other nations while in the comfort of Stride Place.
According to recreation manager Zapphira Neuschwander, the week, hosted by the Portage Regional Recreation Authority's (PRRA) Day Camps, saw kids learn about Canada, Australia, France, Kenya and Egypt.
Transportation Safety Board of Canada to announce findings regarding 2019 train derailment
New information is coming about a train derailment that took place near Portage in January of 2019.
On January 3rd, 2019, CN police were dispatched to investigate the incident and get the train upright. There were no injuries or fatalities in the derailment, which saw 8 cars and 2 locomotives fall off the rails. Fuel was leaking, but was contained before any further damage could be caused.
