Once-quiet school halls set to be abuzz for first time since spring

What parents can expect for Manitoba's 2021-2022 school year

While it is unknown at this point if schools will remain in person for the entire year, those in charge are hopeful.

On Wednesday most schools across Manitoba are expected to have their first day back. Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Jazz Atwal says they are expecting a jump in cases due to the school year, but can not say by how much.

Close to 5,000 new COVID-19 cases and 17 deaths over four days

The increasing COVID-19 cases count did not take a break over the long weekend.

From Friday to Monday the total number of new cases reported was 4,903.

Hospitalizations increased by 87 for a total of 602.

ICU admissions increased by 19 for a total of 137.

Another 17 deaths were reported over the four-day period for a total of 2,407.

There are now 15,486 active cases in Alberta with a positivity rate of over 11 per cent.

While COVID-19 cases rose dramatically the vaccination rates did not.

September 7: Six COVID-19 cases reported in the region

The Northwestern Health Unit has reported six new positive COVID-19 cases in the region.

Two new cases each were found in both the Kenora, and Sioux Lookout regions, and one case each in the Dryden/Red Lake, and Rainy River regions.

Follow up with the persons involved and their contacts has started according to protocol. Anyone who is identified as a contact for these cases will be contacted directly.

The six additional cases found puts the active case count up to eight cases in the NWHU catchment area.

Gordon, Cullen pledging more than $1 million towards school mental health

Manitoban students will be heading back to school with mental wellness on the minds of their educators.

On Tuesday morning, the day before most schools hold their first classes across Manitoba, ministers Audrey Gordon and Cliff Cullen stand outside of Louis Riel School Division's (LRSD) headquarters. Joined by the division's Superintendent Christian Michalik and Canadian Mental Health Association's CEO Marion Cooper, the province announced more than one million dollars will be set aside for mental health care.
