"It’s been a long time coming": Penner on upcoming football season

Beaver Brae Bronco football is finally back for the first time in over a year!

The Broncos will take the field for their home opener on September 24, 2021, against Fort Frances.

Broncos head coach Chris Penner along with his team have been hard at work over the past couple of weeks preparing for their first game of the season. 

“They’re vibrating, which is fantastic, the energy is great they had some really good practices last night it’s fantastic. They can’t wait to do it, they are quite happy. They’re ready for this it’s been a long time coming,” said Penner

Alberta ICU capacity is at 87 per cent, 70 per cent from COVID-19

Government officials provided a life COVID-19 update for Thursday, September 9.

There were 1,510 new cases reported in a 24-hour period.

There are 32 more people in the hospital bringing the total to 679.

There are seven more people in ICU departments bringing that total to 154.

Sadly, another nine deaths were reported bringing that total to 2,434.

There are now 15,977 active cases in the province with a positivity rate of 11 per cent.

The province announces funding to increase health care capacity during 4th wave

Government officials took to the podium today (Thursday, September 9) to announce strategies to alleviate the pressure on the health care system in Alberta. 

During the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals in the province are feeling extreme strain with the rapidly rising number of cases due to the virus. 

Health Minister Shandro announced that $36 million in new funding will go to expanding workforce capacity to treat COVID-19 patients outside of hospitals to alleviate the pressure. 

Winnipeg gets new Acting Deputy Mayor after COVID-19 vaccine controversy

Councillor Markus Chambers will be serving in a new (ish) role.

In a Thursday statement, Winnipeg's Mayor Brian Bowman announced the councillor for the St. Norbert – Seine River region will be stepping in as Acting Deputy Mayor. Chambers previously served as deputy mayor between 2018 and 2020.

"The federal government should’ve been responsible for this": Rickford on vaccine certificate

The start date for the previously announced vaccine certificate is fast approaching.

Starting on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, Ontarians will need to show proof of vaccination, before entering a number of non-essential businesses.

As claimed by Premier Doug Ford the hope from the vaccine passport is to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and help avoid further lockdowns.

Four vaccine clinics happening today

The Northwestern Health Unit has four COVID-19 vaccine clinics in the region today.

The Ignace clinic runs from 9 a.m. to Noon at 1100 Main St. The clinic in Dryden takes place at Dryden High School from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Beaver Brae Secondary School plays host to the Kenora clinic from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the Fort Frances clinics is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the high school.

You're encouraged to book an appointment, but walk-ins are welcome. Anyone born in 2009 or earlier is eligible to get their first dose.

Eighteen COVID-19 deaths reported on Tuesday, September 8

Sadly, 18 more deaths have been reported the highest daily death count in Alberta since January. 

The total number of deaths in the province are now 2,425. 

Alberta has recorded another 1,166 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, September 8.

Hospitalizations have increased by another 45 patients for a total of 647.

 ICU admissions rose by ten for a total of 147 of which 89 per cent are unvaccinated.

There are now 15,618 active cases in the province with a positivity rate of over 10 per cent.
