Grade 12 students in Manitoba reflecting on 2021 graduation: Calvin Christian Part 2

Gavin Buhler is graduating from Calvin Christian Collegiate as one of their two valedictorians. 

Buhler is summing up his last year of high school in one word: weird.

"We've had two lockdowns, so we've had to go through two times of online learning. I'm not one to have a challenge with it, I know some people do, but for me personally, I found it pretty easy," Buhler says.

U.S. senator requests Canada investigated for religious freedom violations over Alberta pastors arrests

A U.S. senator has asked that Canada be investigated for violating religious freedom over the arrests of two Alberta pastors accused of flouting COVID-19 restrictions.

Missouri Republican Senator Jeff Hawley has sent a letter to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

“I am troubled that our Canadian neighbours are effectively being forced to gather in secret, undisclosed locations to exercise their basic freedom to worship,” Hawley wrote.

'Let's not put that at risk': Atwal asking for caution with reopenings

One of Manitoba's top doctors says getting vaccinated and following the fundamentals will go a long way in preventing Manitoba from tightening restrictions once again.

Summer is in full swing in Manitoba with some restriction loosenings Saturday. Dr. Jazz Atwal, Manitoba's Deputy Chief Public Health Officer, says restrictions may be loosening, but not the fundamentals.

June 26: Two cases of COVID-19 reported

The Northwestern Health Unit has reported two new cases of COVID-19 across the region.

The new cases are in the District of Rainy River.

Currently, there are 10 active cases in the district. Six in the Rainy River region, one case each in the Dryden/Red Lake and Sioux Lookout health regions, and two in the Kenora Health region but one of those cases was reported outside of the NWHU catchment area.

Over 4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in the province

As of June 24, 4,022,084 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been delivered to the arms of Albertans. 

Now, 71.3 per cent of Albertans have received at least one dose and 34.3 per cent are fully immunized against COVID-19.

Due to a technical issue on Friday, June 25, only approximate numbers were released with AHS reporting 100 new cases with a positivity rate of 1.7%. 

There will be no data released over the weekend and a complete COVID-19 numbers update will be released on Monday, June 28.

Winnipeg Summer Leisure Guide opening for registration Monday

Winnipeggers can take advantage of a fun-filled summer as the City of Winnipeg unveils the season's programming, including swimming lessons.

On Friday, the City of Winnipeg announced registration for condensed Summer Leisure Guide programming is opening on Monday morning. Summer day camps are among the many activities people can get up to as the province loosens restrictions.

Steinbach Christian principal encourages grads to ‘make an impact’

After a year like no other, the principal of Steinbach Christian School says he is proud of the way their student council made lemonade out of lemons.

Principal Emery Plett says they planned a lot of fun COVID-friendly activities, hoping to create some morale among the students. He says because of their class sizes they were able to have their students in the building every day, all day throughout the school year.

Mastromatteo representing Canada at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The 2020 Canadian Olympic Swim Team will feature a local swimming sensation. Kenora’s Gabe Mastromatteo was chosen yesterday to represent his country at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

He will be a part of the 26 person swim team that will compete for gold starting next month.

Mastromatteo’s mother and coach Janet Hyslop has been with him throughout this year's Canadian Olympic trials and was excited to hear the news.
