North Star Lodge heroes help save a life in water rescue

Two workers at a local lodge say they will never forget the night of June 4 when they helped to save the life of one man, before stumbling onto the body of a second man.

Drake Guse and Kelly Chernosky say they were working at North Star Lodge on Clay Lake, up Highway 609 North of Quibell and Vermilion Bay, when the owner of the lodge, Stan Guse, was contacted by members of the OPP.

Police had only recently received a report of a capsized boat on Clay Lake, shortly after 5 p.m. Their information indicated that two men had been fishing near rapids when their boat capsized.

In Kenora Ladies Slo Pitch action, CUPE and the Wreckers tied 13 to 13, while Northern Harbour dominated last night putting up 30 runs against Bat Intentions, who had 7.

The Toronto Blue Jays go for the series sweep in their three-game road set with the Kansas City Royals today. Left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi starts for the Jays against right-hander Brady Singer. The Jays dominated Kansas City in the first two games, winning by scores of 8-0 and 7-0.

Voting issues reported for Grassy Narrows members, evacuees

Some community members from Grassy Narrows First Nation say they were denied their right to vote on Election Night 2022.

On Election Night, Senator hopeful for the Kenora riding and First Nation advocate, Tania Cameron, raised the issue that Grassy Narrows First Nation did not have a polling station open on election night, leaving members who decided to not evacuate to Thunder Bay late last month without any options to vote.

In-flight assault forces plane to land in Red Lake

A 33-year-old Pikangikum First Nation member is facing three charges after assaulting passengers aboard a flight into the community, which forced the aircraft to land in Red Lake on Monday.

The Red Lake OPP says on June 6 at roughly 5:45 p.m., OPP officers were notified of a flight that was being diverted due to an unruly passenger. The flight had taken off in Sioux Lookout and was headed to Pikangikum before it was diverted.

Mendicino was 'misunderstood' saying cops asked for Emergencies Act: deputy minister

A senior official in the department of public safety says the minister has been "misunderstood" in saying police asked the federal government to use the Emergencies Act in February.

Deputy minister Rob Stewart appeared before the special joint committee that’s examining the Liberals' decision to invoke the act on Tuesday evening. 

In April, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino told the same committee that after weeks of blockades in downtown Ottawa and at several border crossings, the government was in regular consultation with law enforcement including the RCMP. 

Youth elect majority NDP government in mock election

Students across Ontario say they would have voted in a majority NDP government in Ontario’s 2022 Election, after this year’s mock election from Student Vote Ontario.

Each election, Student Vote Ontario asks elementary and high school students across the country to participate in a mock election to learn more about democracy, the parties and their platforms and to help guide students to learn more about the future of the province.

Delays along Highway 17 in Dryden today

Dryden drivers can expect delays along Highway 17 (Grand Trunk Avenue) today and are asked to use extra caution around working crews.

The City of Dryden says Highway 17 from Mary Avenue to Park Avenue will be undergoing emergency water main repairs today until 4 p.m. Both lanes of traffic will remain open, but delays can be expected.

In Women’s Baseball, Dunit took the win over the Riverview Rebels 16 to 11.

In the Casey’s Women’s Soccer League, Dufresne’s defeated the Jarnel Cranes 1-0, while the Rush and Pizzacats tied 2 all.

The Colorado Avalanche are off to the Stanley Cup final, but it could be a while before they know who they'll play. The Avs completed a four-game sweep of the Oilers last night with a 6-5 overtime win in Edmonton.

The Northwestern Health Unit says at this point, the risk of residents in the region contracting Monkeypox, a strain of smallpox that seems to be spreading internationally, is likely to be low, but the health unit is continuing to monitor the area for any suspected cases.

The World Health Organization says monkeypox is a disease transmitted from animals to humans and comes from the same family of viruses that cause smallpox. While smallpox was eradicated in 1980, monkeypox has continued to spread as an endemic in rodents and small animals in central and west Africa.
