Intermediate Saints go undefeated in first tournament of the year
Intermediate Saints went undefeated on Wednesday.
The grade 7/8 soccer teams from the region gathered in Dryden on Wednesday to compete in the first soccer tournament of the year.
The Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints went undefeated that day, beating out the teams from Dryden, Ignace, Lillian Berg, and Beaver Brae schools, capturing the gold in the finals.
Kenora hospital still facing a ‘critical’ staffing shortage
Lake of the Woods District Hospital says they are continuing to operate and serve residents while facing a ‘critical’ staffing shortage in its Emergency Room department.
Hospital leadership says staff are regularly dealing with high volumes of patients while working overtime and giving up vacation time to cover any vacancies. As a result, the hospital is asking residents to recognize staff’s efforts by being understanding, patient and kind when dealing with staff.
Unemployment rate falls to new record low as wages ramp up: StatCan
The economy added 40,000 jobs in May, driven by a gain in full-time jobs as the labour market continued to tighten and wages pushed higher, Statistics Canada said Friday.
The increase came as the unemployment rate fell to 5.1 per cent, the lowest rate since at least 1976 which is as far back as comparable data goes. The unemployment rate was 5.2 per cent in April.

Urgent measures must be taken to ensure rights of Canadian children: UN committee
The United Nations committee on the rights of the child has released a report expressing serious concerns about the welfare of children in Canada — particularly those who are Indigenous.
"The committee is deeply concerned about the discrimination against children in marginalized and disadvantaged situations," said the report, made public Thursday.
The committee cited structural discrimination against Indigenous and Black children, "especially with regard to their access to education, health and adequate standards of living,"
Dryden Fire Service fought basement fire on Ross Street
The Dryden Fire Service responded to a basement fire on Ross Street yesterday afternoon (Thursday, June 8.).
Approximately eighteen crew members and eight apparatus attended the fire shortly after 12:30 p.m.
The fire service says, "crews conducted an offensive attack, and with high heat and heavy smoke were successful in locating and extinguishing the fire in the basement."
No injuries were reported and at the time of publishing the cause of the fire remains unknown.
Up to $250K available for those that lost property to flooding
Residents in the region now have access to the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said in a prepared release, "The disaster assistance program applies to a primary residence and its basic contents, or to a small business, farm, or not-for-profit organization."
"Following a natural disaster, it may provide assistance for basic emergency and clean-up expenses and the costs to repair or replace essential property not covered by insurance."
June 9 Sports Update
In Kenora baseball action, the Carstar Rockies edged out the Tri-Star Red Eyes 15 to 14. CUPE won 14 to 7 against the Renegades. And Kenora DJ Services beat the WHNAC Wreckers 18 – 6.
In Soccer action, TA’s Grade 7 and 8 soccer team took gold in Dryden after going undefeated, beating Beaver Brae 5-0 in the finals. Their next tournament will be June 21 when they host the All Catholic Championships.
Matiowski Farmers' Market celebrates 17th summer
The Matiowski Farmers' Market kicks off its 17th season when it opens on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.
"By the first week of July, we will have over 100 vendors. That is seasonal, 10 week and rotating casual vendors, but for the month of June, we'll start in the 70's and we will grow as the season progresses," said market co-ordinator Helena Devins.
The market takes place Wednesdays at the Whitecap Pavilion on the Kenora Harbourfront and is open from 8:30am to 2:00pm. Admission is free.

From toilet paper to yogurt and coffee to corn chips, manufacturers are quietly shrinking package sizes without lowering prices. It’s dubbed “shrinkflation,” and it’s accelerating worldwide.
In the U.S., a small box of Kleenex now has 60 tissues; a few months ago, it had 65. Chobani Flips yogurts have shrunk from 5.3 ounces to 4.5 ounces. In the U.K., Nestle slimmed down its Nescafe Azera Americano coffee tins from 100 grams to 90 grams. In India, a bar of Vim dish soap has shrunk from 155 grams to 135 grams.
Sioux Lookout woman wins $100,000
A Sioux Lookout resident is $100,000 richer following a $1 bet.
Patricia Beaudoin matched the last six of seven ENCORE numbers in the exact order in the January 8, 2022, LOTTO 6/49 draw to win $100,000.
Beaudoin says she thought at first there was an error with the machine at the store.
"I checked it three times and the store clerk noticed I was taking a while, so she came over to help me out," said Beaudoin in a prepared release from OLG.
