Road and highway update - May 13

Nord road, just north of Pickle Lake at the Highway 599 junction has been closed due to flooding by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). The ministry says the stretch that is closed is from the junction to kilometre marker 137 at Pineiumata River Bridge and marker 150 at Pipestone River Bridge.

The Ministry of Transportation is reporting Highway 105 is closed due to a washout, 44 kilometres north of the Highway 17 junction. 

Lake of the Woods water levels on pace to exceed 2014 peak

The Lake of the Woods Control Board is forecasting the level of the Lake of the Woods is expected to rise by 22 to 30 cm (9-12 in) over the next week, which could exceed levels seen in 2014.

A May 11 report, states that the current forecast for the lake level is approaching the 2014 peak of 323.78 m (1062.2 ft). They say that with the expected rise over the next week, LOTW may exceed the 2014 peak water level in May if the wet weather conditions continue.

It’s not the first time that northwestern Ontario residents have dealt with a number of highway closures in the area, whether it be from a Colorado Low, a transport truck accident or the occasional 880,000 lb boulder, but it’s been a strange start to the spring season with countless closures due to flooding and washouts of roadways.

May 13 Sports update

Toronto Maple Leafs fans were on the edge of their seats last night..... but it was Brayden Point who scored on a rebound with 1:56 remaining in overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs and force a Game 7 in the first-round playoff series between the Atlantic Division rivals. The winner-take-all contest goes tomorrow night at Scotiabank Arena.

Kenora issues evacuation notice due to flooding

The City of Kenora says that garbage crews won’t be picking up north of the bypass in the affected flooded areas. Only to the west (north of the bypass) will garbage be collected.

Due to significant flooding north of Kenora, the city is recommending that residents who live in the flooding zone areas evacuate their homes immediately. Repairs have been taken at the intersection of East Melick Road and Essex Road to ensure that people can evacuate.

Traffic lights down at Hwy 17, Cecil Avenue

Delays can be expected on Highway 17 near Cecil Avenue in Dryden.

The City of Dryden says the traffic lights at Highway 17 and Cecil Avenue are undergoing repairs until further notice, after a transport truck reportedly knocked them out earlier this week.

Residents are asked to use caution in the area, and anyone with questions or concerns are asked to contact the Public Works office at 807-223-2367.

Plane that crashed with fugitives was overweight, heading for Toronto: Witness

VANCOUVER — A woman who knew the pilot of a fatal flight that killed two men wanted in separate murder plots says he told her he was heading for Toronto and was concerned about the plane's weight. 

The woman, who asked not to be identified because she was afraid for her safety, said she spoke with pilot Abhinav Handa at the Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, B.C., before his plane took off on the cross-country trip in late April. 

New dental care, childcare initiative comes to downtown Dryden

A new initiative between two community organizations will help to provide free childcare services while a parent receives free dental work.

The Northwestern Health Unit and the Kenora District Services Board are announcing new services through the KDSB’s Early ON child centre and the NWHU’s dental clinic that are now available at their building at 20 King Street.

Transport Canada: Pilot was flying illegally at time of crash

Transport Canada has confirmed that a four-seater plane that crashed near Sioux Lookout, killing two wanted criminals and two pilots, was flying illegally at the time of the crash.

26-year-old Abhinav Handa of Richmond, British Columbia was confirmed to be the pilot of the downed Piper PA-28 by members of the OPP, after police released the names of the four men involved in the crash on April 30.
